Brock Wrestlers ready for Senior World Championships
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Three members of the Brock Wrestling Club
will be participating in the World Senior Championships in Henning,
Denmark from September 21-27th.
Jessica MacDonald, will make her second appearance at the World
level competing at 51kg. MacDonald placed 5th last year losing on a
4-4 tie for the bronze medal. She has had a strong summer of
competition winning the German Grand Prix, the Canada Cup and
placed third at the Polish Grand Prix.
Tonya Verbeek is the second member of the seven women team that
trains here at Brock University. As most would know, Verbeek is a
two time Olympic medalist at 55 kg as well as having a world
bronze. She is a threat for the gold medal in every event she
enters in and will be here. The only competitor that she has not
beaten in the field is two time Olympic Gold medalist Saori Yoshida
from Japan.
Evan MacDonald returns to the World level having taken a few years
away from International competition. He has moved up in weight, now
competing in the 74 kilo category. MacDonald defeated 2008 Olympian
Matt Gentry in a special wrestle-off to earn the right to represent
Canada as well as winning the National Championship back in March.
He is a two-time top eight finisher at 66kg at the World level and
has the potential to be a factor here
