Women's Volleyball outlasts Varsity Blues 3-2
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's volleyball team (5-4 OUA) won for the fourth time in their last five matches as they outlasted the University of Toronto Varsity Blues by the score of 3-2 (25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 21-25, 15-7) Friday night at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
Brock led 2-0 before the Varsity Blues senior leader Heather Bansley heated up offensively as Toronto came back to tie the match two games each. In the fifth and deciding game, Brock took a commanding 7-1 lead and never looked back on route to their fifth victory of the season.
The Badgers had a balanced offense led by senior Erin Mercer (Rockwood, Ont.) who recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore middle Rachel Roorda (St. George, Ont.) contributed with 11 kills and five block solos. Senior Katelyn Giesbrecht (Virgil, Ont.) added nine kills while junior Shannon Anderson (Newmarket, Ont.) and freshman Tori Stirling (Whitby, Ont.) chipped in with eight kills each in the victory. Junior setter Ally Fast (St. Catharines, Ont.) also recorded the double-double finishing with 44 assists and 14 digs in the victory.
For the Varsity Blues, Bansley led all scorers with a match high 33 kills, 24 digs and five service aces. For the match she hit an impressive .569 going 33-for-51 with just four errors.
The Badgers next action is Saturday afternoon at 2pm when they host the York University Lions at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
