Womens Soccer blanks Sheridan Bruins 2-0
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – A single goal in each half propelled the Brock Badgers women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over the Sheridan College Bruins Sunday afternoon at home for their first win of the pre-season.
Play in the first half was tight, with each team being very strong defensively. However the Badgers were able to score the opening goal of the contest mid-way through the first half, as junior Alex Esposito (Mississauga, Ont.) was able to deflect a cross past the surprised Sheridan keeper.
In the second half, the Badgers fielded a completely different lineup and used their fresh legs to wear down the visiting Bruins. The Badger's hard work and smart play was rewarded late in the second half when freshman Sarah Charlton found the back of the goal on a strike from in close.
In goal senior Syreeta Rhoden (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and sophomore Luciana Di Paolo (Newmarket Ont.) shared the shutout.
"The team was very disciplined today and did a great job communication on the field," said Brock head coach John Durish. "We've got a young team and we're using some new formations and the girls are learning it and implementing it very well. What we've done in practice came through strong in this game."
The Badgers have improved in each of their pre-season games, and look to continue that development when they open their OUA schedule on September 12 when they visit the Western Mustangs. The team opens the home portion of the schedule against Laurier at 1:00pm on September 18.
