TORONTO, Ont. - The No. 4 ranked Brock University women's soccer team (1-0 OUA) defeated the York Lions by the score of 1-0 in their 2009 OUA regular season opener.
In the 69th minute, Brock sophomore forward Alexandra Esposito (Mississauga, Ont.) blasted a rebound into the top left hand corner past York netminder Sarah Fiorini for her first of the seaon and the eventual game winner.
Brock junior netminder Syreeta Rhoden (Niagara Falls, Ont.) recorded five saves for her first shutout of the season. Rhoden will be the Badgers No. 1 netminder this season replacing five-year standout and 2008-09 Brock Female Athlete of the Year Tiffany Scriver.
"We played a very disciplined and organized team game not giving York many chances on offense," said head coach Charles Ivanov. "Through our style of play we were able to create a number of key chances at the offensive end. A victory like this helps us lay a foundation which we will continue to build on each game this season."
