Women's Soccer knocks off No. 1 ranked Montreal, Advances to CIS National Championship Final

LANGLEY, B.C. - The Brock University women's soccer team (12-4-4) continued their Cinderella Story as they knocked off the No. 1 ranked Montreal Carabins by the score of 2-0 to advance to the CIS National Championship final Sunday.

The Badgers were once again forced onto the secondary field at Trinity Western due to the rain. However, Mother Nature held off on the rain just long enough for the Brock win.

Brock opened the scoring in the 40th minute when Jill Geier (Ancaster, Ont.) sent a through ball to OUA West Rookie of the Year Sloan George (Oakville, Ont.) who chipped a shot over the Carabins’ keeper’s head and into the net.

Brock was helped by the goalie’s best friend on the day as Montreal hit three posts firing 24 shots at Badgers keeper Tiffany Scriver’s (Burlington, Ont.) net. The Badgers again saw a 1-0 lead going into half and like their quarterfinal win on Thursday Brock looked to go up by two. In the 68th minute the Badgers found their second goal off the foot of midfielder Laura Tirone (Welland, Ont.) who launched a free kick over the keeper’s head.

Scriver was named the games MVP for with 10 saves, many of which were of the diving variety. After the game the fifth year captain said: “It’s a huge accomplishment to be in the finals tomorrow, it has been our goal since the season began. I’m really proud of our team. We’ve been through a lot this season. We deserve to be here.”

The Badgers continued to stifle the opposition with defence. Badgers coach Charles Ivanov said of his team’s ability to come up big in pressure situations said that “We played with a lot of heart and were desperate in desire to win the game. There was no tomorrow for us.

One of the Badgers’ captains, goal keeper Tiffany Scriver has seen some of the Brock women’s soccer programs most successful seasons during her time in St. Catharines and stated that the Badgers had goals in mind before leaving for nationals. “We’re out to show Canada who Brock is and that the program should not be taken lightly”.

The Badgers now move onto the CIS National Championship Game on Sunday, November 9th at 6:30 pm (eastern standard time) to face hosts the Trinity Western Spartans who defeated Victoria in a shoot-out in Saturday's other Semi-Final.
