Women's Hockey defeats Mustangs in shootout 5-4
LONDON, Ont. - The Brock University women's hockey team (7-10-3 OUA) put together a third period comeback and won in shootout 5-4 over the Western Mustangs Sunday afternoon at Thompson Arena. The Badgers have now collected seven points in their last four games (3-0-1).
Brock would get on the board first with less than two minutes left in the first period when Maggie Young (Tiverton, Ont.) recorded her first goal of the season.
In the second period, Western would answer with three straight goals coming from Kaley Sisler, Katie Dillon and Lindsay Gidomski. With less than three minutes left in the second, Brock's Kristen Dewsbury (Oshawa, Ont.) would make it a one goal game adding her second of the season.
Just 28 seconds into the third period, the Mustangs would regain the two goal lead as Dillon beat Brock netminder Beth Clause (Hamilton, Ont.) for her second goal of the game and eighth of the season.
The Badgers would battle back bringing it within one goal just over a minute later as Young setup Kelly Walker (Brampton, Ont.) who would beat the Mustangs Lindsey Martin with the shorthanded marker.
After some pressure on offense, the Badgers would get the equalizer tying the game 4-4 with just under five minutes left in regulation as Karolyn McIlmoyle (Newmarket, Ont.) and Samantha Simms (St. George, Ont.) setup Shannon McLeod (Port Dover, Ont.) for her sixth goal of the campaign.
After nothing was decided in overtime, McLeod would become the hero in shootout for the Badgers as she buried a backhand past Martin for the victory.
In goal Clause recorded 29 saves for the victory while Martin turned aside 19 Brock shots in a losing effort. Clause has been expectional in 2010 registering 126 saves in the past four contests with an impressive .941 SV%.
