ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's hockey team (5-10-3 OUA) opened 2010 with a three-point weekend as they defeated UOIT 2-1 in overtime and came up short against the second place Queen's Gaels losing in shootout 3-2.
Saturday afternoon, the Badgers ended their six game winless streak as they defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks by the score of 2-1 in overtime. Senior Kelly Walker (Brampton, Ont.) opened the scoring for Brock as she added her first goal in eight games. Sophomore Shannon McLeod (Port Dover, Ont.) who assisted on the first goal, recorded the game winner 2:06 into overtime as she beat the Ridgebacks Emma Thompson for her fourth of the season with a shorthanded marker.
Sunday afternoon versus the second place Gaels, Brock took an early 2-0 lead with two powerplay goals in the first period coming from McLeod and sophomore Melissa Geary (Wasaga Beach, Ont.).
In the second and third periods, Queen's would pepper Brock senior netminder Beth Clause (Hamilton, Ont.) as they outshot Brock 28-7. Elizabeth Kench would add both Gaels goals for her sixth and seventh goals of the campaign.
After nothing was solved in the five minute overtime, Queen's Becky Conroy and Kench would beat Clause with back-to-back shootout goals for the victory.
