WBB: Brock falls 63-49 to No. 6 GeeGees in OUA semi-finals
OTTAWA, Ont.- The Brock University women's basketball team (23-13 overall, 1-1 playoffs) dropped a 63-49 decision to the No. 6 ranked Ottawa GeeGees in the OUA semi-finals Friday night at Montpetit Hall.
Brock led by two at the half 27-25.
In the third quarter, the Badger went on a 7-2 run to open the quarter before the host GeeGees answered with a 5–0 run to cut the lead to two 34-32 with five minutes left. With the score tied 41-41, Ottawa's Sarah Nolette knocked down a three with 17 seconds remaining to give the GeeGees a 44-41 lead after 30 minutes.
In the fourth quarter, Ottawa would go on a 9-2 run in the opening five minutes leading by 10 points 53-43. The GeeGees would extend their lead to 61-46 with 2:40 remaining, which Brock would never recover from.
Ottawa had three players in double figures led by three-time OUA East Player of the Year Hannah Sunley-Paisley who registered the double-double adding 16 points and 16 rebounds. Jenna Gilbert contributed with 16 points and five rebounds including four three-pointers. Nolette chipped in with 11 points adding three treys. Senior Bess Lennox registered a game-high 23 rebounds to go along with seven points.
Leading the Badgers offense was junior Samantha deJong (St. Catharines, Ont.) who added 15 points and seven rebounds. Junior Nicole Rosenkranz (Niagara Falls, Ont.) contributed with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double. Senior Emily McKay (Toronto, Ont.) chipped in with 11 points in the loss.
For the game, Brock shot 28.3% (17-for-60) from the field and just 10% (1-for-10) from beyond the arc. The GeeGees went 22-for-74 (29.7%) from the floor and shot 29.6% (8-for-27) from three-point range. Ottawa dominated the glass outrebounding Brock 65-35.
The Badgers next action is Saturday night in the OUA bronze medal game when they take on the loser of the Carleton versus Windsor OUA semi-final contest.
