Brock women's basketball rolls past Niagara 84-26

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's basketball team opened the 2011-12 season with an 84-26 victory over the Niagara College Knights in the 2nd Annual Peninsula Classic.

The Badgers led 30-6 after 10 minutes on route to a 58-point victory.

Brock had five players in double figures, led by senior Emily McKay (Toronto, Ont.) who finished one rebound shy of a double-double registering 15 points and nine rebounds.

Junior Samantha DeJong (St. Catharines, Ont.) recorded the double-double adding 12 points and 11 boards. Senior Tara Giallonardo (Welland, Ont.) contributed with 14 points while newcomer Nicole Rosenkranz (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and senior Jessica Del Signore (Brantford, Ont.) chipped in with 12 and 11 points respectively. 

Shelby Johnston led the Knights with six points.

The Badgers full-court pressure caused Niagara problems right from the opening possession.

Brock forced the Knights to 36 turnovers while keeping them to just 14.9% (7-for-47) from the field which included 4.0% (1-for-25) in the second half. BU shot 38.7% (29-for-75) from the floor including 35.0% (7-for-20) from beyond the arc. They also outrebounded Niagara 57-34.

The Badgers next non-conference action is October 14th to 16th when they take part in the Carleton Ravens Invitational Tournament in Ottawa.
