Explosive first half helps Badgers to 89-54 win over Waterloo

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock Badgers women's basketball team (9-4 OUA) scored early and often, cruising to an 89-54 win over the visiting Waterloo Warriors on Wednesday night.

The Badgers jumped out to an early early lead, holding a 26-10 advantage after the first quarter and a 46-20 lead at the half en route to a decisive victory over Waterloo.

Brock was lead by senior guard Whitney Gorges (Welland, Ont.) whose 21 points was tops in the game.  Emily McKay (Toronto, Ont.) chipped in 18 points while Hayley Neal (Mississauga, Ont.) added 15 points and eight rebounds.  St. Catharines-native Samantha deJong counted a double-double for the Badgers with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Kate Kuntze scored 15 points off the bench to lead the Warriors while Saraya Hickey scored 14 in the losing effort.

True to form, the Badgers were once again tough on defense.  Brock forced 30 turnovers, which lead to 35 points.  Additionally, Brock held Waterloo to 21-for-64 from the field (32.8%), including 3-for-18 (16.7%) from beyond the arc, while shooting 38-for-72 (52.8%) from the field.

With the win, Brock currently sits in sole possession of fourth, two points behind third place Laurier.  The Badgers return to action January 22 when they host No. 2 Windsor.  Game-time from the Bob Davis Gym is 2 p.m.
