Women's Basketball falls to GeeGees 58-55

OTTAWA - The Brock University women's basketball team (0-1 OUA) opened the 2010-11 OUA regular season with a 58-55 loss against the Ottawa GeeGees Friday night at Montpetit Hall.

Brock could not solve Ottawa forward Hannah Sunley-Paisley who went off for a game high 25 points and 21 rebounds to lead all scorers. Sarah Nolette also reached double figures for the GeeGees adding 12 points including a perfect 4-fotr-4 from beyond the arc. Ottawa shot 44% (22-for-50) from the field.

The Badgers, who shot just 31.0% (18-for-58) from the field, were led by senior Hillary Woodside (Fall River, NS) led the Badgers with 20 points and four steals. Junior Tara Giallonardo (Fonthill, Ont.) contributed with 13 points, seven steals and five rebounds with junior Emily McKay (Toronto, Ont.) chipping in with 10 points, five rebounds and three steals in the loss. 2009-10 leading scorer, Whitney Gorges (Welland, Ont.) was held to just six points going 3-for-10 from the field.

Despite forcing 32 Ottawa turnovers, Brock struggled from both the charity stripe (59.3%) and three-point range (21.4%).

The GeeGees almost doubled up Brock on the boards outrebounding them 46-24 in the contest.

The Badgers next action is Saturday night at 6m when they take on the Carleton Ravens at the Raven's Nest.
