Strong fourth quarter leads Badgers over Lady Vees 74-57
SUDBURY, Ont. - The Brock University women's basketball team (5-1 overall, 3-0 OUA) came out flying in the fourth quarter outscoring the Lady Vees 22-6 in the final 10 minutes on route to a 74-57 road victory Friday night.
Once again the Badgers full press caused problems as the Lady Vees ran out of gas in the final quarter. Brock forced 32 Laurentian turnovers despite being outrebounded 44-29. In three conference games the Brock defense has forced their opponents to 103 turnovers.
Brock had four players in double figures led by senior Whitney Gorges (Welland, Ont.) who led all scorers with 17 points including three treys.
Senior Britt Pegg (Weyburn, Sask.) contributed with 14 points, five rebounds and five assists. Junior Hillary Woodside (Fall River, NS) added 13 points which was highlighted by a three-pointer from 10 feet outside the arc at the end of the third quarter to give the Badgers a 52-51 lead. Senior Lauren Stewart (Hamilton, Ont.) rounded out the Brock leaders finishing with 11 points in the victory.
Leading the Laurentian offense was Lisa Furchner who recorded 14 points and six rebounds. Katie Goggins added 11 points (9-for-12 FT) and 11 rebounds for the double-double.
Brock shot 33.0% (25-for-75) from the field while knocking down nine three-pointers (9-for-26). Laurentian went to the charity stripe 30 times in the contest connecting on 70.0% (21-for-30). From the field the Lady Vees shot 37.0% (17-for-46).
The Badgers look to extend their OUA win streak to four games Saturday night when they travel to Toronto to take on the York Lions.
