Women's Basketball falls to host Carabins 77-74 in OT

MONTREAL - The Brock University women's basketball team (6-2 OUA, 10-4 overall) ended the first half of the season with a 77-74 overtime loss to the host University of Montreal Carabins. The Badgers finish the tournament with a 2-1 record.

In the second quarter Brock led by as many as nine points before the Carabins would go on a 12-2 run to take a 30-29 lead with 45 seconds remaining. Brock would answer with the final three points of the half leading by two after 20 minutes 32-30.

Early in the fourth quarter, Montreal led by seven 56-49 before the Badgers answered with eight straight points of their own taking the lead 57-56 with seven minutes left in regulation.

In the final two minutes of the contest , Brock's Whitney Gorges (Welland, Ont.) would knock down a three-pointer to put the Badgers up by one 69-68 with 1:21 remaining.

With 12 seconds left, Montreal's Jessica Bibeau-Cote would knock down 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to tie the game 69-69 sending it to overtime.

The host Carabins would score eight unanswered points in overtime taking a 77-69 lead with 2:28 left. The scrappy Brock squad would not go away answering with the next five points only to come up short in the end for their lone loss of the tournament.

Leading the Badgers was Gorges who recorded a game high 20 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Jessica Del Signore (Brantford, Ont.) contributed with 14 points including going 4-for-9 from beyond the arc. Senior Britt Pegg (Weyburn, Sask.) added 13 points while senior Lauren Stewart (Hamilton, Ont.) and sophomore Emily McKay (Toronto, Ont.) chipped in with 10 points each in the loss.

Brock opens the second half of the OUA season at home on January 6th at 6pm when they host the Waterloo Warriors at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
