Women's Basketball advances with 72-66 victory over Marauders
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's basketball team (13-9 OUA, 1-0 playoffs) defeated the McMaster Marauders by the score of 72-66 at the Bob Davis Gymnasium Wednesday night to advance to the OUA West Semi-Finals against No. 2 ranked Windsor Lancers.
"This s a great victory for our program," said Brock head coach Si Khounviseth. "We played well as a team tonight and did a lot of little things right. We now have to work hard the next two days of practice to prepare for Windsor this Saturday."
The Badgers trailed 66-62 before going on a 10-0 run in the final four minutes on route to a six point victory. This season at home Brock defeated McMaster both times (74-61; Feb. 6) and (72-66; Feb. 24).
Leading the Badgers was junior Hillary Woodside (Fall River, NS) who led all scorers with a season high 21 points and nine rebounds. Senior Whitney Gorges (Welland, Ont.) contributed with 17 points while sophomore Tara Giallonardo (Fonthill, Ont.) added 15 points and four steals.
Hailey Milligan led the Marauders with 19 points and seven rebounds. Taylor Smith added 13 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in the loss.
Despite being outrebounded 45-30 in the contest, Brock shot an impressive 47.4% from beyond the arc going 9-for-19. McMaster was held to just 30.0% (3-for-10) from three-point land.
Brock was also 17-for-21 (81.0%) from the charity stripe to the Marauders 7-for-12 (58.3%).
