Women's Basketball rolls past Gryphons 81-44
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's basketball team (13-9 OUA West) rolled past the Guelph Gryphons by the score of 81-44 in their last regular season contest Saturday afternoon at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
Prior to the game, the Badgers honoured their two graduating seniors including fifth year Lauren Stewart (Hamilton, Ont.) and fourth year Britt Pegg (Weyburn, Sask.).
In the second quarter, Brock broke the game wide open outscoring the Gryphons 33-3 to lead by as many as 38 at the half, 53-15. Brock also forced the Gryphons to 27 turnovers leading to 31 points off turnovers.
The Badgers had four starters in double figures led by senior Whitney Gorges (Welland, Ont.) who recorded a career high 27 points including a season high five three-pointers. Stewart contributed with 13 points while junior Hillary Woodside (Fall River, NS) and Pegg chipped in with 12 and 11 points respectively in the victory. Woodside also pulled down a game high 10 rebounds for the double-double.
Woodside ended the OUA regular season ranked first in 3PT percentage shooting a career best 43.7% (31-for-71). Gorges finished second in OUA FT percentage; 82.6% (57-for-69). Devyn Cuncic (Carlisle, Ont.) had a career best 78 assists which was 4th in the OUA while Pegg finished 5th in steals with a career high 55.
Guelph's Alex Yallin and Kara Muhlhausen added 10 points each in the loss.
With the victory, Brock finishes fourth overall and will host fifth place McMaster in the first round of OUA playoffs on Wednesday, February 24th at 7:00pm.
