Women's Basketball defeats Lakehead 68-62

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's basketball team (12-8 OUA West) defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves by the score of 68-62 Saturday night at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
The Badgers trailed 9-8 with 2:53 left in the first quarter, before going on a 25-3 run over the next seven minutes leading by as many as 21 points 33-12 with 5:53 left in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, Lakehead outscored the Badgers 26-16 cutting the lead to just nine points 56-47 at the end of thirty minutes.
With five minutes left in regulation, Devyn Cuncic (Carlisle, Ont.) would knock down a three-pointer as the shot clock expired to put Brock up 61-52. Lakehead would then go on a 10-2 run over the next three minutes cutting the lead to just one point 63-62 with 1:41 left in regulation.
The next two possessions, Emily McKay (Toronto, Ont.) and Cuncic would knock down clutch field goals to secure the victory.
Leading the Badgers offense was junior Hillary Woodside (Fall River, NS) who recorded 14 points and six rebounds. Also in double figures was senior Lauren Stewart who contributed with 12 points. McKay, Cuncic and senior Whitney Gorges (Welland, Ont.) all chipped in with eight points each in the victory.
Lakehead's Tasia McKenna led all scorers with a game high 17 points in the loss.
The Badgers next action is Wednesday, February 17th at 6pm when they travel to Laurier.
