Trio leads Badgers past Marauders 74-61

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's basketball team (11-7 OUA) defeated the McMaster Marauders by the score of 74-61 at the Bob Davis Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

Brock led 31-25 at the half, before erupting for a season high 32 third quarter points leading 63-46 after 30 minutes. The Badgers shot 45.5% (25-for-55) from the field while keeping McMaster to 32.8% (22-for-67).

The Badgers trio of seniors Whitney Gorges (Welland, Ont.) and Lauren Stewart (Hamilton, Ont.) along with junior Hillary Woodside (Fall River, NS) combined for 47 points. Stewart and Woodside both contributed with a game high 16 points each. Gorges contributed with 15 points and eight rebounds while going 4-for-7 from beyond the arc.

Junior Devyn Cuncic (Carlisle, Ont.) was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field finishing with nine points while senior Britt Pegg (Weyburn, Sask.) added some spark off the bench chipping in with seven points and seven assists in the victory. 

For McMaster, Taylor Chiarot and Elizabeth Burns added 13 points each while senior leader Taylor Smith went just 3-for-16 from the field for 10 points.

The Badgers next action is February 12th and 13th at 6pm when they host the Lakehead Thunderwolves at the Bob Davis Gymnasium. Brock, McMaster, and Lakehead are now all tied for third place in the OUA West Division with identical 11-7 records.
