Women's Basketball drops 76-75 Overtime decision to Mustangs

 LONDON, Ont. - The Brock University women's basketball team (7-5 OUA West) dropped a 76-75 decision in overtime to the Western Mustangs in a key OUA West matchup Saturday afternoon on the road.

Trailing by two with 12 second left in overtime, Brock junior Hillary Woodside (Fall River, NS) would drain a three-pointer with six seconds to put the Badgers up 75-74. After a Western timeout, Kelly Molden would hit the game winning shot with two seconds left for the Mustangs 11th victory of the season.

Brock led by 11 at the half, 38-27. To open the third quarter, the Mustangs went on a 12-3 in the first five minutes to bring it within two points, 41-39. The Badgers led by two after 30 minutes 51-49.

With score tied 62-62 in the fourth quarter, sophomore Jessica Del Signore (Brantford, Ont.) would knock down a jumper with 45 seconds left to put the Badgers up by two 64-62.

With a chance to secure the victory after a Western foul by Amanda Anderson, junior Devyn Cuncic (Carlisle, Ont.) would miss both free throws with 10 seconds remaining.

Western's Lauren Parks would answer knocking down a jumper with one second left on the clock sending it to overtime.

Leading the Badgers was senior Whitney Gorges (Welland, Ont.) who recorded a game high 19 points and eight rebounds. Also in double figures were Woodside, sophomore Emily McKay (Toronto, Ont.) and senior Britt Pegg (Weyburn, Sask.) who contributed with 12, 12 and 10 points respectively.

For Western, senior Amanda Anderson led all scorers registering a game high 28 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Katelyn Leddy recorded the double-double adding 11 points and 11 rebounds. Lauren Parks also reached double figures contributing with 13 points and five rebounds.

Brock shot 36.4% (28-for-77) from the field while Western finished the contest shooting an impressive 47.7% (31-for-65). The Mustangs also outrebounded Brock 43-31.

The Badgers next action is Wednesday, January 20 when they end their four game road schedule at Waterloo.
