Brock Rowing Salutes the Volunteer Coach
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Last October Brock recognized the contribution of all the volunteer coaches by naming their new eight the "Volunteer Coach".
Brock’s rowing program relies on the efforts of all the assistant volunteer coaches to achieve success. At the time of the boat christening it was mentioned that the cycle continues when the Brock athletes then go out into the community and coach at various high schools in the spring.
This spring there are 20 Brock athletes coaching rowing at various high schools many in the Niagara peninsula and some as far away as Orangeville. "I am really proud of the contribution these athletes make to their community," said Brock Coach Peter Somerwil. "It gives Brock athletes another perspective of the sport. The first year they coach they develop a new appreciation of the word volunteer with their new commitment."
Tom Kent a firefighter in the city and Brock alum said "It’s been great having Brock athletes help coach because as active competitors themselves they can really relate and explain what the high school athletes feel and what to expect on race day."
There are a lot of high school athletes that would not have the opportunity to row without the dedication of the volunteers from Brock. For safety, every crew needs a coach in a coach boat in spring and the knowledge they bring from one of the top rowing programs in the country helps many young athletes appreciate the sport.
