Men's Rowing advances at Henley Royal Regatta
ENGLAND - The Brock University Men’s Rowing heavyweight 8+ captured their first victory at the Henley Royal Regatta defeating A.G.S.V. Gyas, Netherlands advancing them to the second round tomorrow.
“The guys executed their race plan well and we are looking forward to their race tomorrow," said men's heavyweight head coach Steffan Wagner.
"The men have left nothing to chance in their training leading up to Henley," said Brock head coach Peter Somerwil. "The last couple of days have been a challenge as they have been tapering and getting restless to get into the gates. They jumped to a quick early lead of half a length 200m into the race. Strategically this was important as they faced a much bigger, by a stone and a half (one stone = 14 pounds) crew from The Netherlands."
The Brock crew comprised of coxswain Alexsia Dekaneas (Ancaster, Ont), stroke Ben Cushnie (Fonthill, Ont.), Brendan Coffey (Fonthill, Ont.), Keegan Drummond (Quispamsis, NB), Thomas Morley (St. Catharines, Ont.), Joshua Gracin (Welland, Ont.), Travis King (St.Catharines, Ont.), Corey Brunton (St. Catharines, Ont.), Sylas Coletto (Vineland, Ont.) and Patrick O’Connor (Toronto, Ont.) had one of the best times of the day winning in a time of 6.36.
The Temple Challenge Cup is a collegiate level event attended by the best collegiate crews from around the world, as well as in the United Kingdom. Crews compete down 2100m in dual races (2 boats side-by-side) with single elimination (instead of the 6 boat racing as seen in the Olympics).
