MHOCK: Late goal leads No. 4 Western over Badgers 3-2
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University men's hockey team (13-14-1 OUA, 2-2 playoffs) had their season come to an end Friday night at home as they dropped a 3-2 decision to the No. 4 ranked Western Mustangs (21-4-3 OUA, 4-0 playoffs) in Game Two of the OUA West semi-finals.
In the opening period, the Mustangs peppered Brock senior goaltender Kurt Jory (Brandon, Man.) early and often, but it was Jory making 17 first period saves to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes.
The Mustangs would get on the board first on the power play at 8:52 of the second period, as Kevin Baker buried a wrist shot over Jory's shoulder for the 1-0 lead. Keaton Turkiewicz and Zach Harnden added the assists.
Three minutes later at 11:49, Brock tied the game 1-1, when senior Ryan Allen (Fort McMurray, Alta.) setup sophomore CJ Dickson (Thorold, Ont.) in the slot who put it past Mustangs goaltender Josh Unice for his first goal of the postseason.
Brock would take a 2-1 lead on the power play at the 3:31 mark of the third period. Freshman Sean Jones' (Newmarket, Ont.) shot from the point through traffic would catch Unice off-guard beating him along the ice. Sophomore Kevin Christmas (Hamilton, Ont.) added the assist.
The Mustangs would tie the game 2-2 with 6:49 remaining in the third period. Julian Cimadamore and Jason Furlong setup Yashar Farmanara whose fanned wrist-shot beat Jory five-hole.
With just 6.5 seconds left in regulation, the Mustangs Steve Reese chipped a bouncing puck between the legs of the Brock defenseman and tipped it across the crease to Furlong who put it into the open side of the net for the game winner and series sweep.
In goal, Jory registered 27 saves in the loss. Unice remained undefeated in the 2012 playoffs collecting 22 saves for his fourth straight victory.
Playing in their last career game at Brock were Allen, Jory, Derek Brochu (Welland, Ont.), Isaac Smeltzer (Estevan, Sask.) and Steve Miller (Thunder Bay, Ont.).
