Brock Athletics and St. Catharines Fire Services partners with Community Care for Extinguish Hunger Food Drive
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University Department of Athletics are pleased to announce a new community initiative and partnership between St. Catharines Fire Services and Community Care of St. Catharines & Thorold.
On Friday, December 3rd the Brock Men's Hockey team will host the Waterloo Warriors in the first annual Extinguish Hunger Food Drive where the Brock Badgers and St. Catharines Fire Services will look to collect 3,000 pounds of food for Community Care.
"Our 24 varsity teams not only strive to be the best in their respective sport, they spend countless hours raising funds for their programs; yet still finding time to raise awareness on the needs of our community," said interim Director of Athletics Chris Critelli. "This is a great community initiative and partnership with Fire Services and Community Care which we will continue to build on in the future."
"In the Fire Service we take great pride to ensure that our community get the much needed help that they deserve in a professional and timely manner," said St. Catharines Fire Services captain Dave Wood. "Our goal is to provide the needed items the Food Bank requires and we will ensure they get fulfilled, so we may touch as many families as we can throughout our community. Having the privilege to serve the community in the Fire Service I have seen the community come together to assist families after tragic events have affected them. So I am confident that this event will be a great success, and allow us to continue this tradition for many years to come."
Community Care of St. Catharines & Thorold is the oldest consecutively run food bank in Ontario. Their clients visit every other month or six times a year. In a day, they process as many as 150 families representing over 450 people a day. They distribute approximately 3,000 pounds of food, literally over a ton a day, including emergency bags for those who are experiencing difficulties.
"When you consider the things that we have that we take for granted as athletes that others don't have, it shows why this partnership is important to our community," said Brock Athletic Council president Pat O'Connor. "The athletic council will help to make this a very successful event."
The game is scheduled for 7:15 pm at the Seymour-Hannah Centre. With a non-perishable food item, tickets will be $2 for adults and $1 for students and seniors. Tickets will be on sale beginning this Saturday at the Seymour-Hannah Centre. Community Care bins will be on site for those who want to contribute to this cause.
