Brock Men's Hockey knocks of No. 4 ranked Western Mustangs 6-4
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University men's hockey team (13-9-6 OUA West) ended their 2010-11 OUA regular season with a 6-4 upset over the No.4 ranked University of Western Ontario Mustangs Friday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
The Badgers have clinched a playoff spot and await their opponent as the OUA regular season schedule ends this weekend.
With the score tied 3-3 after two periods, Brock would take a 5-3 lead midway through the third period answering with back-to-back power play markers from freshmen Kevin Christmas (Kingston, Ont.) and Matt Abercrombie (Sarnia, Ont.) at 8:10 and 12:11.
With just over two minutes left in regulation, Western's Geoff Killing would cut the lead to one goal 5-4. With 14 seconds remaining, junior Derek Brochu (Welland, Ont.) would add his third of the night with an empty-netter to secure the victory.
Leading the way for the Badgers was Brochu who recorded three goals and one assist for a four-point performance. This was his first career hat trick as a Badger.
Abercrombie contributed with three more points adding two goals and one helper. He closes out the OUA regular season as the OUA West rookie leading scorer finishing with 32 points (18 goals, 14 assists). Christmas closed out the Badgers scoring with his third goal of the season.
For the Mustangs, Jason Swit, Geoff Killing, Shaun Furlong and Keaton Turkiewicz all added single goals in the loss.
In goal, Brock sophomore Jordan Bent (St. George, NB) recorded the victory allowing three goals on 19 shots. He replaced starter Kurt Jory (Brandon, Man.) who left the game after suffering a leg injury five minutes into the second period. Western's Anthony Grieco was issued the loss after allowing five goals with 26 saves.
