Men's Hockey drops 6-4 decision to No. 4 ranked Mustangs
LONDON, Ont. - The Brock University men's hockey team dropped a 6-4 decision to the No. 4 ranked Western Mustangs on the road Thursday night at Thompson Arena.
The Badgers opened the scoring on the power play 4:33 into the first period when freshman Matt Abercrombie (Sarnia, Ont.) and junior Isaac Smeltzer (Estevan, Sask.) setup freshman Kaine Geldart (Kingston, Ont.) who beat Western starter Josh Unice for his seventh goal of the season.
The Mustangs Matt Paltridge would tie the game at 10:13 beating Brock starter Kurt Jory (Brandon, Ont.) for his first of the campaign.
Brock would take a 2-1 lead at 13:04 as senior Joey Pell (Dryden, Ont.) added his first goal on the power play with junior Adam Schwark (Saskatoon, Sask.) adding an assist.
The lead would be short lived, as Western added back-to back markers less than a minute apart to take a 3-2 lead with goals from Yashar Farmanara and Steve Reese.
With less then a minute left in the opening period, the Badgers power play would go to work again as Geldart and freshman Jordan Gignac set up freshman C.J. Dickson for his second of the campaign tying the game 3-3.
Brock would take a 4-3 lead just 2:23 into the second period when Dickson and junior Derek Brochu (Welland, Ont.) setup Abercrombie for his team leading 10th goal and Badgers fourth power play marker of the night.
Western would add two more goals in the final eight minutes of the second period with markers from Kyle Lamb and Brandon Greenside. The Mustangs led 5-4 after 40 minutes.
Late in the third period, Western added some insurance as Kevin Baker and Farmanara setup Reese for his third point of the night and 11th goal of the campaign.
In goal, the Badgers Kurt Jory suffered the loss allowing five goals on 23 shots. Freshman Vince Cusick (Hamilton, Ont.) replaced Jory in the third, turning aside 11 of 12 Mustangs shots. For Western, Anthony Grieco picked up the victory replacing starter Josh Unice after 20 minutes. Grieco recorded 11 saves on 12 shots for his ninth victory of the season.
The Badgers next action is Friday, December 3rd at 7:15 pm when they host the Waterloo Warriors at the Seymour-Hannah Centre as part of the 1st Annual Extinguish Hunger Food Drive Event in partnership with St. Catharines Fire Services and Community Care. Tickets with a non-perishable food item are just $2 for adults and $1 for children, students and seniors.
