Men's Hockey opens regular season with 3-2 victory over York

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University men's hockey team (1-0 OUA) opened the 2010-11 OUA regular season with a 3-2 victory over the York Lions at the Seymour-Hannah Centre Friday night.

"We played hard tonight, especially in the third period," said Brock head coach Murray Nystrom. "This is a well deserved victory for our guys and is a great way to start the season. We will now take the next week to prepare for a strong Guelph squad who we host next Friday."

Brock opened the scoring 11:25 into the first period as freshman Kevin Christmas (Hamilton, Ont.) and junior Derek Brochu (Welland, Ont.) setup freshman Thomas Stajan (Mississauga, Ont.) who would beat York netminder David Blair from the top of the crease for his first career goal.

The Badgers would take a 2-0 with 2:15 left in the first period, as freshman Kaine Geldart (Kingston, Ont.) would add his first career goal in a Badger uniform with Brochu and freshman Matt Abercrombie (Sarnia, Ont.) adding assists.

York's Chris Jones would get one back just 11 seconds later on a questionable goal inside the crease of Brock starter Kurt Jory (Brandon, Man.). Brock led 2-1 after 20 minutes.

The Lions would tie the game on the power play 12:38 into the second period as Adam Stuart and Ben Rubin setup Kyle Lamb who beat Jory stick side on a one-timer from the top of the circle.

Just over four minutes later at 16:52, Abercrombie would add his first career goal burying home a rebound past Lions' keeper Blair for the eventual game winner. junior Isaac Smeltzer and Kaine Geldart were credited with assists.

In the third period, the visiting Lions were hungry for a goal, but it was Jory standing tall turning aside nine of his game high 26 saves in the final period for the victory.

York pulled their goalie in the final 30 seconds and with the faceoff in the Brock defensive zone with 0:18 seconds remaining, Brock was able to control the play and keep the puck to the perimeter to secure the win.

The Brock Badgers next regular season home game is Friday, October 8, 2010 at 7:15pm versus the Guelph Gryphons at the Seymour Hannah Complex. Advance tickets to all Badgers home games are available at the Walker Complex front desk on campus or at Front Row Sports located inside the arena.
