Men's Hockey falls to GeeGees 2-1
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University men's hockey team (6-5-0-0) lets a game slip away to the University of Ottawa Gee Gee's (4-6-1-0). Despite dominating the play and outshooting their opponents 31-23, Brock was unable to get the win.
Just 2:51 into the first period Brock found themselves in an all to similar position, down 1-0 early. Ottawa's center Paul Forster won an offensive face-off directly to winger Corey Thibaudeau, who put it to the back of the net before the Badgers could react. In response Brock took over the game, out shooting Ottawa 13-8 in the period. The difference in this game was goaltender Riley Whitlock who put forth an outstanding performance, and turned away all 13 shots in the first period.
Brock's persistence would be rewarded in the second, when the hard work of Brad Flynn (Moncton, N.B.) drew a penalty and sent the Badgers to the power play. On the ensuing power play, Brock converted as Derek Brochu (Welland, Ont.) managed to jam the puck past Whitlock and tie the game 1-1.
At 19:30 of the second, Ottawa scored their second goal off an offensive draw. The second goal was scored by Forster and assisted by the Thibaudeau, as the duo earned their second points of the evening.
Brock continued to carry the play in the third period, but Whitlock with the help of two posts was able to shut the door on the Badgers and earn Ottawa's fourth win of the year.
Brock's next home game will take place on November 27, 2009 against the Laurier Golden Hawks, 7:35 pm at the Seymour-Hannah Centre
