Men's Hockey knocks of No. 8 ranked Nipissing 2-1
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University men's hockey team (6-4-0-0) hold on in the late minutes against the No. 8 Ranked Nipissing Lakers (6-4-0-0), in tight, physical affair. The Lakers leading scorers Andrew Marcoux and Ryan Maunu were held pointless by the Badgers effective defence.
The Lakers notched the first goal of the game on an early rush, as Matt Lahey snapped a quick shot past Mark Yetman (Mt. Pearl, NL) only 3:37 into the first period for the 1-0 lead.
Dan Dooley (Saint John, NB) knotted it up at one goal a piece with less than three minutes remaining in the first period, using his excellent work effort to record his second goal of the season. Unfortunately, Dooley left the game after blocking a slap shot off the foot on the penalty kill in the second period.
Entering the third period tied at 1-1, the Badgers showed determination bombarding the Lakers' goaltender with a barrage of shots early in the period. Josh Schram (Paris, Ont.) deflected the powerplay point shot past into the Lakers' net to pull ahead by one goal with 7:51 remaining in regulation play.
After some untimely Badger penalties, Yetman was forced to turn away 13 third period shot, most from around the perimeter of the crease. Yetman turned away 33 of 34 shots in the game including some spectacular sprawling pad saves in the final minute of the game, recording his fifth win of the season.
Penalty trouble, injuries and illness continues to plague the Badgers. The Badgers had a slight advantage in the faceoff circle, but sloppy turnovers and poorly timed penalties lead to a shot advantage for the Lakers. H1N1 Flu, which caused the Badgers to postpone their game against OUIT Ridgebacks on November 7, 2009, has continued to eat through the Brock roster and has kept some of Brock's most skilled players out of the line-up.
Brock next home game will take place on November 14, 2009 against the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees, 7:35 pm at the Seymour-Hannah Centre
