Friesen Deflects Badgers Past Windsor in 3-2 OT Win

The Brock University men's hockey team (5-3-0-0) defeated the Windsor Lancers (1-5-1-0) in game two of their double header. Freshman goaltender Jordan Bent (St. George, N.B.) received his first start for the Badgers, and recorded his first OUA win.

With the momentum gained from their first win of the season, Windsor came out flying in the first period. Due to a relentless fore check, the Lancers were able to cause a turnover in the offensive corner and feed Kyle Nishizaki (Chatham, Ont.) in the slot who scored on the first shot of the game. Bent would stand tall for the Badgers and quickly made some big saves, allowing Brock to gain confidence and press the attack. Freshman forward Vince Scott (Mississauga, Ont.) displayed a burst of speed, creating a two-on-one opportunity. Scott faked the pass and scored short side to tie the game 1-1.

Brock kept pressing, and rewarded with a power play opportunity. On the power play, Gary Friesen (Niagara-on-the-lake, Ont.) found Steve Mullin (Guelph, Ont.) who scored his second goal in as many games. Brock closed out the first period with the 2-1 lead.

Windsor began the second period the same way they began the first, with a quick goal. This time it was Brett Vandehogen (Chatham, Ont.) who managed to jump on a rebound and find the back of the net just twelve seconds into the period. The contest picked up in physical play, neither team giving an inch. Neither team was able to break the deadlock before the end of regulation.

Overtime was quick as Ryan Allen (Fort McMurray, Alta.) forced a turnover in the offensive zone, fed Scott Duncan (Ancaster, Ont.) at the point. Duncan ripped a shot, that was neatly deflected by Friesen to give Brock the 3-2 overtime win.

The Brock Badgers next home game is Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at the Seymour Hannah Centre. The puck will drop at 7:35 pm as they take on the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Ridgebacks.
