Men's Hockey knocks off Mustangs 5-3

LONDON, Ont. - The Brock University men's hockey team (3-0-0 OUA) knocked of the defending Queen's Cup Champion Western Mustangs by the score of 5-3 on the road Saturday night.

Brock would get on the board first 5:12 into the first period when junior forwards Ryan Allen (Fort McMurray, Alb.) and Steve Mullin (Guelph, Ont.) set up senior Eric Toonders (Winchester, Ont.) on the power play.

Midway through the first at 10:01, Western would tie it up 1-1 when Scott Aarssen found Jason Furlong for his first goal of the season.

In the second period it was all Brock as they answered with three straight goals to lead 4-1 after 40 minutes. Junior Scott Duncan )Ancaster, Ont.) and rookie Kyle McNeil (Cambridge, Ont.) set up rookie Kirk Pearce (Rosetown, Sask.) for his first goal in a Badger uniform 4:42 into the period. With a man advantage at 12:52, junior Vince Scott (Mississauga, Ont.) and Toonders setup sophomore Isaac Smeltzer (Estevan, Sask.) who buried a shot behind the Mustangs Keyvan Hunt to put Brock up 3-1. With six seconds left in the period (19:54),  McNeil and Pearce got their second points up the night setting up Steve Miller (Thunder Bay, Ont.) for his first of the campaign.

Three minutes into the third period, the Mustangs would add two of their own just thirty seconds apart making it a 4-3 game. Joe McCann would setup former Niagara IceDogs Patrick Lee who beat Brock rookie netminder Mark Yetman (Mount Pearl, NL) for his first of the season at 3:08.  Kyle Lamb would then add his first with assists from Kevin Baker and Keaton Turkiewicz at 3:40.

Brock would make it 5-3 at 12:21 with Pearce and junior Gary Friesen (Niagara on the Lake, Ont.) setting up rookie Joe Tolles (Toledo, OH) for his second goal in as many nights. Pearce would finish with a career high three points adding one goal and two assists.

Four of the five Brock goals came from defensemen.

In goal Yetman would improve to 3-0 registering a career high 36 saves. In three games, he has recorded 91 saves on 96 shots for a .948 SV%.

The Badgers next action is October 16th at 7:35 when they play host to the Waterloo Warriors in their regular season homeopener at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
