Men's Hockey escapes with 6-5 victory over No. 3 Mustangs
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University men's hockey team (9-12-1 OUA) knocked off the No.3 Western Mustangs for the third time this season as they escaped with a 6-5 victory at the Seymour-Hannah Centre Friday night.
The Mustangs took an early penalty which cost them as Brock scored 20 seconds into the powerplay on a Gary Friesen (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.) goal only 1:09 into the first period. Brock played well on both sides of the puck, recording five blocks in the first period as well as many big hits led by Joey Pell (Dryden, Ont.).
Brock repeated their early first period offense in the second, on two Josh Schram (Paris, Ont.) goals in the first five minutes of the period. Vince Scott (Mississauga, Ont.), after spotting a weakness in the Western goalie's glove side on Schram's second goal, netted a goal of his own to the high glove side of Josh Unice to put Brock ahead by four goals. Kris Schmidt recorded his first point for the Badgers, assisting on the Derek Brochu (Welland, Ont.) deflection goal. Western posted one goal from the side boards to enter the third period only four goals behind.
The Mustangs took the early start in the third period, scoring 2:02 into the third period. Brochu responded with a deflected Joe Tolles (Toledo, OH) point shot to give Brock another four goal advantage. The Mustangs barraged the net, first scoring on a wide wraparound over the shoulder or Mark Yetman (Mount Pearl, NF). Mustangs' forward Lamb scored again off a redirection. Western scored two more in the final two minutes to make for a close finish. With an empty net, Western pushed but never broke the Badgers lead to end the game with a final score or 6-5.
Brock's next home game will take place on January 23, 2010 against the Lakehead Thunderwolves, 7:35 pm at the Seymour-Hannah Centre
