Men's Hockey romped by Gryphons 7-1
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. The Brock University men's hockey team (8-11-0 OUA) dropped a 7-1 decision against the visiting Guelph Gryphons Saturday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre. This was the fourth time in the last six games that Brock battled the Gryphons.
Guelph opened the scoring 6:44 into the first period as Matt Lyall beat Brock's Mark Yetman (Mount Pearl, NL) for his fifth of the season.
In the second period it was all Guelph as they scored four straight unanswered just three minutes apart midway through the period including two shorthanded markers to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Geoff Guimond and Kris Belan added the shorthanded tallies with Zach Lillie and Michael Kusy adding even strength goals.
Jordan Bent (St. George, NB) entered the game after the fifth Guelph goal and held Brock in the game, stopping all four shots faced in the remainder of the second period.
At 17:50 of the second period, Guelph forward Alex Magera went to the box for goaltender interference to give Brock a powerplay. As the penalty expired, at 19:51, Derek Brochu (Welland, ON) made a precise pass from the corner to Vince Scott (Mississauga, ON), who tapped the puck into the open side of the net. Brock finished the period on a positive note and only four goals down.
Guelph ended all hope of a third period Brock comeback as Belan and Patrick Campbell scored two powerplay goals from point shot deflections. Brock surrendered two powerplay goals and two shorthanded goals in the game and were outshot by the Gryphons 38 to 13.
In goal the Gryphons Scott Van Bommell recorded 12 saves for the victory while Yetman suffered the loss.
Brock's next home game will take place on January 22, 2010 against the Western Mustangs, 7:35 pm at the Seymour-Hannah Centre
