Men's Basketball knocks off GeeGees 72-70

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - Brock sophomore Didi Mukendi (St. Catharines, Ont.) hit a baseline jumper with 12.5 seconds left in regulation as the Badgers knocked off the Ottawa GeeGees by the score of 72-70 in front of 675 fans at the Bob Davis Gymnasium Friday night. On the last possession Mukendi then forced Ottawa senior Josh Gibson-Bascombe to throw up an air ball in the final seconds.

Early in the fourth quarter, Brock led by eight 57-49 before the GeeGees duo of Gibson-Bascombe and Donnie Gibson led their team on a 13-2 run over a four minute span to lead 62-59 with 4:29 remaining. In the final four minutes there would be three more lead changes with the Badgers coming out on top in the end on clutch jumper by Mukendi over the outstretched hand of Ottawa's Louis Gauthier.

Brock had three plates in double digits led by rookie standout Clinton Springer-Williams (London, Ont.) who led all scorers with 22 points. 14 of his 22 points came in the second half where he knocked down 3-of-4 from three-point land. Mukendi and sophomore Joel Whitty (St. Catharines, Ont.) both added 13 points with Whitty going 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.

For the GeeGees, Gibson-Bascombe and Gibson were kept to just two points in the first half before combining for 28 of Ottawa's 40 points in the second half. Gibson Bascombe led Ottawa with 17 points, six assists and six steals. Also in double figures were Warren Ward with 16 and Gauthier and Gibson with 14 and 13 points respectively.

The Badgers shot 47.4% (27-for-57) from the field while keeping Ottawa to just 34.4% (21-for-61). Rebounds were 36-35 in favour of Ottawa.

The Badgers next action is Saturday night at the Bob Davis Gymnasium when they host the No. 1 ranked Carleton Ravens at 8pm.
