Men's Basketball falls to Gryphons 86-64
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University men's basketball (8-14 OUA West) ended the 2009-10 season with an 86-64 loss to the Guelph Gryphons Saturday afternoon at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
Early in the second quarter the Badgers trailed by two points, 23-21. Over the next four minutes, the Gryphons went on a 16-3 run leading by as many as 16 points 39-23, with 3:37 left in the half.
With 6:38 left in the third quarter, Brock would cut the lead to 10 points, 50-40. Led by fifth year senior Jay Mott, the Gryphons would put together their second largest run of the game outscoring the Badgers 14-2 over the next five minutes leading by as many as 22 points, 64-42 with 1:52 left inte third quarter.
Without Brock leading scorer Clinton Springer-Williams (London, Ont.) in the lineup for the second time in the past four games, Guelph's Mott put on a shooting display in his last game of his university career. Mott led all scorers with a career high 41 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double. He finished 14-for-22 from the field including a career best nine three-pointers going 9-for-13 from beyond the arc.
For the Badgers, junior Andrew Ferguson (St. Catharines, Ont) and junior Jay Fleming (St. Catharines, Ont.) contributed with 12 and 11 points respectively in the loss.
Prior to the game, Brock University Assistant Athletic Director Chris Critelli and the President of the Brock University Athletes Council Mike Walker, presented the St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation with a $2000 cheque for Breast Cancer equipment in the Niagara Region.
