Late comeback leads Brock over Gryphons 57-56

GUELPH, Ont. - Freshman standout Clinton Springer-Williams (London, Ont.) knocked down two clutch free throws in the final 11 seconds as the Brock men's basketball team (7-8 OUA) defeated Guelph 57-56 on the road Saturday afternoon.

Brock trailed by as many as nine points, 52-43, with 7:32 left in the fourth quarter. The Badgers would put together an 8-0 run over the next four minutes to bring it within one point 52-51 with 3:56 remaining.

The next two possessions, Guelph hit back-to-back field goals making it 56-51 with 3:25 left. Brock would answer right back with two field goals of their own trailiing 56-55 with 2:28 remaining in regulation.

With Guelph leading 56-55, Springer-Williams would be fouled by the Gryphons Adam Bering sending him to the line for two which he would make good on for the victory.

The Gryphons Dan McCarthy would miss a jumper in the final seconds for the win, as the Badgers escaped with the much needed victory.

Leading the Badgers offense was sophomore Didi Mukendi (St. Catharines, Ont.) who recorded a game high 16 points, including two three-pointers. Springer-Williams finished with 15 points and five rebounds. Rounding out the Brock leaders were sophomore Mark Gibson (Toronto, Ont.) and senior Mike Cruickshank (Toronto, Ont.) who contributed with eight and seven points respectively.

Guelph had three players in double figures led by Jay Mott who recorded 15 points. Jonathan Moscatelli and McCarthy chipped in with 13 and 11 points in the loss.

The Badgers next action is Wednesday, February 3rd at 8:00 pm when they host the Western Mustangs at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
