Getting to Know Your Badgers - Ken Dalton
Throughout the spring and summer months we will catch up with many of the Badgers top returning athletes for the 2011-12 season as part of the Getting to Know Your Badgers.
Our latest student-athlete who we had the chance to ask a few questions to was Brock men's fencer Ken Dalton.
Why did you decide to come to Brock?
I came to Brock because it felt like a comfortable and fun campus to be a part of. Other schools I had selected just didn't have the same feel. I knew I was going to be spending a lot of time on campus and with the team, so a place I could enjoy was very important.
What influenced you to get involved with fencing?
I was always interested in fencing but never had the opportunity to try it. Once I had the chance I went for it and have been seriously addicted to this unique sport.
Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions?
Heading to the tournament I always grab a Tim's Bagel Belt. They are so good and give me the energy needed for an early morning and into the day. Once I'm at the venue I focus on stretching out my quads and hamstrings then a few drills with my coach and I'm good to go.
Who has been the toughest opponent you have gone against?
My toughest opponent has always been me. There is so much mental discipline needed as a fencer. One moment of lost focus can make the most novice fencer difficult, and on strong days you can be unbeatable.
If you could play on any other Brock Athletic team which one would it be?
Probably rowing or swimming, I really enjoy being on the water and racing. Those are about the only other sports at Brock I could see myself getting into.
Who has been the most influential person in your life?
My parents and family. They have made me how I am today and pretty much owe it all to them. I had some great coaches along the way that have helped me athletically including Tim Stang and Jennifer Hintenberger.
What do you want to do after university?
After university I will be applying to the Niagara Regional Police. I will continue to fence and hopefully keep rising in the national rankings.
If you could travel to any place in the world where would you go?
Everywhere. I love travelling. First I would probably got to Australia or Thailand and then take my time backpacking back home.
