Baseball sweeps Marauders in OUA home opener
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University baseball team opened their 2010 OUA regular season with a two-game sweep over the McMaster Marauders winning by scores of 4-3 and 7-2 at Community Park Saturday.
In Game One, newcomer Kurtis Robinson (Mississauga, Ont.) recorded the victory after going 6 2/3 innings allowing three runs on six with a game high nine strikeouts. Freshman Justin Ayles (Brampton, Ont.) pitched two solid innings in relief giving up one hit over two innings of work with two strikeouts. In the top of the ninth with two out and two runs on, Brock closer David Gardiner (Ingersoll, Ont.) would come in to retire the final batter for his first career OUA save.
Leading the offense was freshman Daniel Forte (Mississauga, Ont.) who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Senior Justin Parro (Brooklin, Ont.), freshman Shaun Valeriote (Guelph, Ont.), freshman Jeff Kosta (Mississauga, Ont.) and junior Matt Kissel (Witby, Ont.) all chipped in with one hit and one run scored in the victory.
In Game Two, the Brock offense came alive with Parro, Valeriote, rookie Adam Velocci (Markam, Ont.) and sophomore Mitch Pergaine (Hamilton, Ont.) all having two-hit performances. Brock finished the two-game sweep with 10 stolen bases led by Parro who stole four times.
Senior Steve Hough (Brampton, Ont.) recorded the victory after going five complete innings allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and five walks.
The Badger next action is Sunday afternoon at 1:00pm when they host the Queen's Gaels in a double header at Community Park.
