Baseball prepares for 2010 season
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The fall baseball season is upon us, after a long off-season that saw many changes for the Badgers the 2010 team is ready to take shape. Saturday morning at 9am players will report to the team’s training camp in hopes of becoming part of something special, a team that will compete for an OUA, and National championship.
The 2009 season saw many highs and lows, as Badgers captain Mike Walker became only the second baseball player ever to be named Brock University’s Male Athlete of the Year, but in the same season the team missed the playoffs, and did not finish in the top two in the OUA for the first time in the team’s history.
This was unacceptable for Head Coach Jeff Lounsbury and his staff, and changes were needed. Many faces from last year’s team are gone after graduating, but the team has brought in several new recruits they expect to challenge the already strong core of returning players.
Coach Lounsbury expects this combination on new and returning players to mesh well and build a team that can compete for championships annually. “We're really excited about the players we have in camp this season,” said Coach Lounsbury. “We expect to be playing baseball well into the fall.”
The Badgers will have a week of training camp, that will include four exhibition games (Doubleheaders against Bulletproof 18 yr Old Elite team, and the McMaster Marauders) followed by a weekend tournament in Laurier, where the Badgers will face some of the best baseball teams in Ontario.
The 2010 OUA season will start Saturday, September 11th when the Badgers take on the McMaster Marauders in a doubleheader that will start at 4pm. September 11th will also be the team’s third annual Brock Baseball Alumni Day that will feature an alumni baseball game, bands and an after party at a local bar.
Stay tuned for daily stories throughout training camp and the 2010 season.
