Championship Baseball and Rowing squads to be honoured with banner raising

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – Brock University athletics will be honouring the 2010 OUA Men’s Baseball and Men’s Rowing championship teams with a banner raising Saturday.  Both teams will be in attendance to see their championship banners raised during half time of the men’s basketball game against Laurentian, at approximately 8:45 p.m.

In early October, the Brock University baseball team captured the third OUA Championship in school history by defeating the Western Mustangs in their home park.  The win was the Badger’s first OUA title since 2004.

On the year, the Badgers compiled a 26-12 record on the way to winning the OUA championship.  The Badgers also played strong, but fell just short of winning the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association national championship, finishing second.

The season was highlighted by the play of rookie Shaun Valeriote (Guelph, Ont.) who batted .519 (55-for-106) in the team’s 38 games, while hitting four homeruns and driving in 38.  Valeriote was named the OUA Most Valuable Hitter and a conference all-star as a shortstop.

Also named OUA all-stars were catcher Cam Graham (Sarnia, Ont.), left fielder Justin Parro (Brooklin, Ont.) and relief pitcher Justin Ayles (Brampton, Ont.).

In late October, the Brock men’s rowing team narrowly edged out Western to capture their first OUA title since 2004. The Brock men finished one point ahead of Western for the men's crown.

The Badgers were impressive on the men's lightweight side capturing gold in the double, four and the eight. Also medalling for Brock was the men's heavyweight four who placed second overall and the men's heavyweight eight, men's heavyweight double and men's heavyweight single who all captured bronze.

The squad used the victorious performance at the OUA championships to propel themselves to a second place finish at the Canadian University Rowing Championships.

Tickets to Saturday’s basketball games and banner raising ceremony, and any other Badgers home basketball games, are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors with children under 10 free.  Advanced tickets can be purchased at the Walker Complex front desk, or by calling 905-688-5550 ext. 4060.  Tickets will also be available at the gate.
