Baseball wins fourth straight with 3-2 victory over Blues
TORONTO, Ont. - The Brock University baseball team (5-2 OUA, 8-3
overall) captured their fourth straight victory as they defeated
the University of Toronto Varsity Blues by the score of 3-2 on the
road Tuesday.
Riding another strong outing by senior Mickey Campeanu
(Mississauga, Ont.), the Badgers capitalized on offensive
opportunities and were able to pull out an important OUA conference
win.
The Badgers opened the scoring, getting on the board in the second
inning when senior Korie Assivero (Barrie, Ont.) worked the count
for a lead off walk and later scored when rookie Bill Steven
(Fonthill, Ont.) grounded out.
In the fifth inning, Brock scored two more runs when Steven hit a
lead off double and rookie Mitch Peragine (Hamilton, Ont.) plated
him with a two out hit. Two batters later, senior Mike Walker
(Guelph, Ont.) blasted a line drive down the third base line that
scored Peragine, making it 3-0.
Campeanu (2-0) overpowered Toronto batters all afternoon and was in
complete control until the Blues mounted a rally of their own in
the seventh, scoring a run to make it 3-1. Campeanu was
awarded the win going 7 2/3 innings, allowing four hits, two
walks and striking out six batters while only allowing one run.
Toronto made it interesting in the ninth, scoring a run to make it
3-2, but senior Matt Martinow (Simcoe, Ont.) closed the door,
earning his second save of the season. Picking up the loss for
Toronto was Tyler Wilson.
Leading the Badgers offensively was Stevens (2-for-4, with a
double, an RBI and a run scored), Peragine (1-for-5, with a stolen
base, an RBI and a run scored) and Walker (2-for-4 ,with a triple
and an RBI),
In the victory, Mike Walker extended his hit streak to 11 games. In
the OUA, Walker is now 18-for-30 (.600) with a .733 SLG%.
The Badgers are back in action Saturday, at home, against the
Guelph Gryphons at 1pm.
