Baseball splits with defending OUA Champion Marauders

HAMILTON, Ont. - The Brock University baseball team (2-1 OUA, 3-2 overall) split with the defending OUA Champion McMaster Marauders for the second time in less than a week Sunday afternoon at Bernie Arbour Stadium.

In Game One, the Badger came from behind for the second straight game to defeat McMaster by the score of 7-6. In Game two the Marauders answered with five runs in the fifth on route to a 7-1 victory.

In Game One, the Badgers trailed 6-0 after four complete innings before answering with four runs in the fifth and three in the seventh for the victory.

In the top of the 7th inning with two out and the bases loaded, Brock newcomer Brad Vaters (Tillsonburg, Ont.)  came through with a clutch two run single to right giving the Badgers their first lead of the game 7-6. 

After three strong innings out of the bullpen from Kyle Porter (Pickering, Ont.), senior Mickey Campeanu (Mississauga, Ont.) took over in the bottom of the 7th striking out all three Marauder batters he faced for his first career save. 

Senior Mike Walker (Guelph, Ont.) led the Badgers offense going 4-for-4 with two doubles. Senior Casey Burnie (Peterborough, Ont.) was 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored. Vaters and Korie Assivero (Barrie, Ont.) combined for all three RBI in the 7th inning.  

In Game Two, Brock led 1-0 after four complete innings, before McMaster added five runs in the bottom half of the fifth to break the game open.

Chris Piccini went the distance for the Marauders allowing one run on eight hits while striking out  four. He also led the MAC offense going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Matt Piccini (2-for-3) and Sean Lemon (2-for-3) both collected two hits each in the victory.

For the Badgers, Walker went 2-for-4 ending the afternoon with six hits while Matt Kissel (Whitby, Ont.) contributed with a 2-for-3 performance in the loss.
