Baseball opens OUA season with 18-13 victory

KITCHENER, Ont. - The Brock University baseball team (1-0 OUA, 2-1 overall) opened the 2009 OUA regular season with an 18-13 road victory over the Waterloo Warriors Saturday afternoon.

The Badgers trailed 5-0 after two innings, before exploding for 18 runs on 21 hits, one of the teams most productive offensive outputs since the aluminum bat era.

Leading the Badgers offense were seniors Korie Assivero (Barrie, Ont.) Casey Burnie (Peterborough, Ont.) and Mike Walker (Guelph, Ont.). Assivero recorded a career best 4-for-6 with two doubles, four RBI and three runs scored. Burnie went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Walker finished the afternoon going 3-for-7, with three RBI and two runs scored.  

Sophomores Craig Jacques (Delhi, Ont.) and Matt Kissel (Whitby, Ont.) both recorded two hits each while adding two RBI and scoring two runs. Sophomore Cam Graham (Sarnia, Ont.) also registered two hits going 2-for-3. 

For Waterloo Aaron Butler recorded three hits going 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Alan Kung was 2-for-5 driving in a team high three runs. Mike Glinka (2-for-3) and Jason Diniz-Wood (2-for-5) both contributed with two hits each in the loss.

Junior Steve Hough (Brampton, Ont.) picked up the victory for the Badgers going 2 2/3 innings allowing just one hit while striking out one. The Warriors Navjot Sidhu picked up the loss allowing seven runs (six earned) in just 2/3 innings of work.

The Badgers next action is Sunday afternoon when they travel to Hamilton for a doubleheader against the defending OUA Champion McMaster Marauders. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm at Bernie Arbour Stadium.
