Brock Baseball splits with McMaster in non-conference action
HAMILTON, Ont. - The Brock University baseball team opened the 2009 season with a split against the defending OUA champion McMaster Marauders in non-conference action Wednesday night. The Badgers defeated McMaster 8-0 in Game One and dropped Game Two by the score of 7-3.
In Game One, four Brock pitchers combined for the two-hit shutout. Senior righthander Matt Martinow (Simcoe, Ont.) picked up the victory.
Leading the Badgers offense was senior Mike Walker (Guelph, Ont.) who went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Casey Burnie (Peterborough, Ont.) also went 2-for-4 with one RBI. 2008 Brock Rookie of the Year Matt Kissel (Whitby, Ont.) contributed with one hit and two RBI while newcomer Mitch Peragine (Hamilton, Ont.) added a single.
In Game Two, the Badgers led 3-0 early on before giving up a number of walks and errors in the middle innings which McMaster would capitalize on. Junior southpaw Bobby Ambrose (St. Thomas) would pick up the loss for Brock.
On the offensive side, junior Justin Parro (Whitby, Ont.) went 2-for-2 with two stolen bases. Senior Ben Sylvester (Brantford, Ont.) was 1-for-4 with an RBI while sophomore Max Christiansen (Mississauga, Ont.) added a double rounding out the Brock leaders.
Brock will open the 2009 OUA regular season on the road this weekend when they travel to Waterloo on September 5th and McMaster on September 6th.
