Baseball sweeps Gryphons in doubleheader


GUELPH, Ont. - The Brock University baseball team (9-5 OUA) took two games from the last place Guelph Gryphons on the road Wednesday night by scores of 5-2 and 7-0. Seniors Mickey Campeanu (Mississauga, Ont.) and Matt Martinow (Simcoe, Ont.) threw back-to-back complete games for the Badgers.

In Game One, the Badgers trailed 2-1 after three innings before adding three runs in the top of  the fourth and an insurance run in the sixth.

Leading the Badgers offense was rookie Brad Vaters (Tillsonburg, Ont.) who went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a stolen base. Mitch Peragine (Hamilton, Ont.), Matt Kissel (Whitby, Ont.) and Cam Graham (Sarnia, Ont.) all contributed with one hit and one RBI each in the victory.

Campeanu went seven complete innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out six Guelph batters.

In Game Two, Martinow pitched a complete game shutout allowing four hits while striking out nine Gryphons.

Offensively, senior Mike Walker (Guelph, Ont.) extended his OUA hit streak to 14 games going 2-for-3 with a single, triple and an RBI. He now has 29 hits in 14 games this season which leads the OUA.

Senior Casey Burnie (Peterborough, Ont.) also recorded two hits going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Peragine rounded out the Brock leaders going 1-for-3 with two RBI.
