A message from Brock Sports and Recreation Executive Director Melissa Krist
Over more than half a century, Brock University has proven itself as a post-secondary institution with a proven pedigree of athletic excellence.
Our Brock Badgers varsity teams have won more than 130 provincial and national championships, and our student-athletes have reached the pinnacle of their respective sports, from winning individual and team national and world championships, to Olympic gold.
But like so many other sectors, universities have felt a significant financial impact from the COVID-19 pandemic. In my role as Director of Brock Sports, I see that impact every day as student-athletes, coaches and athletic staff are asked to achieve greatness amid increasing costs and decreasing budgets.
Brock Badgers student-athletes are working hard every day, training and competing, and representing the Brock University community across the province and country.
But they need your help.
Today, we have two key areas in need of financial support: student well-being, and coaching leadership.
Nutrition plays a key role in the health and well-being, and in the athletic success of our student-athletes. Fueling our teams is a critical part of game-day success, but the cost of getting the student-athletes the caloric intake they need in order to achieve the highest levels of performance is an expensive undertaking. An average nutritious meal for a team costs between $250 and $400, and over the course of a season that can add up to as much as $5,000. This is a critical are of need for our teams.
Likewise, supporting our student-athletes with proper coaching leadership is crucial to their success — both on and off the field. We are seeing an increasing need for more basic support of our coaching leadership. Despite an increasing amount of time required, many of our Badger coaches continue to volunteer their time. But coaching today isn't just about the Xs and Os during practices and games. They are spending many more hours per week supporting the overall development of well-rounded student-athletes. Coaches must be proficient in all aspects of University culture from supporting the mental health and well-being of students to understanding the importance of equity, diversity and inclusion. With your support, we can increase coaching leadership through professional development and provide appropriate financial support in order to attain the high performance coaching environment our student-athletes thrive in.
Thank you in advance for considering how you can support the student-athletes, coaches and staff that will help continue to shape an environment of success at Brock University.
With Best Wishes,

Melissa Krist
